What is MRI?
Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or MRI, is a painless, non-invasive medical test that uses powerful magnets and radio waves to create detailed images of the inside of your body. These high resolution images provide important information that helps your Physician diagnose and monitor various conditions without the use of radiation. This safe procedure typically takes between 30 to 60 minutes.
What Should I Expect?
For almost all insurance carriers, a “pre-certification” or permission to perform the MRI is required. This can take a few minutes with some carriers to days and even weeks with others. If it is approved, most patients can have their MRI and be back to the office within a week.
***Many insurance carriers will NOT approve an MRI. Instead, they require as part of their own protocols for providing MRI permission, six weeks of physical therapy. If this happens, our office will get back to you with a prescription for physical therapy.
*** Your appointment for the MRI will be given to you by our office or the MRI department will contact you directly. Once you get your date, and complete your MRI, keep your appointment with your doctor to review it.
REMEMBER: If you have NOT had your MRI, please be sure to change your follow-up appointment made to review the MRI. Authorization time may vary by insurance carrier and could sometimes take days or weeks to be approved. Be sure your return appointment is AFTER your MRI is performed. Please contact our Pre-Authorization Specialist for your authorization status if you have not heard from us within 72 hours (3 days) of your visit. Call 203-265-3280 ext. 1118
What To Wear
For all MRI scans, you will be required to change into a hospital gown. Wear comfortable clothing, and it is good practice to leave jewelry and valuables at home. The changing area is private and there is a small lockbox for your keys and wallet. If you are wearing anything metallic, such as jewelry, dentures, eyeglasses, or hearing aids that might interfere with the MRI scan, we will ask you to remove them. You should not have any credit cards in your pocket during the scan because the MRI magnet can affect the magnetic strip on the card.
After My MRI
You may resume normal activity after you leave the MRI. Your physician will review your MRI and results with you when you return to the office.
